National:Inmates Set Fires in Riot in Kentucky
Hundreds of prisoners had to be relocated after inmates set their prison on fire. Northport Training Center was engulfed by flames for almost a straight 24 hours. The reason for the fire would not be released but 8 staff members and 8 prisoners were injured. Prisoners first set fire to a trashcan and its contents. All the inmates were subdued within 2 hours and a perimeter was formed by police so the prisoners could not escape. Many wondered how they even got hold of anything that could start a fire but because some prisoners are allowed to smoke in designated parts of the prison, there were matches available. Of course this is an unfortunate event but I think it shows that the prisoners should be under tighter watch and especially not allowed to smoke.

International: EU to Draft New Immigration Policy by October
Carl Bildt, the foreign minister of Sweden, announced that the European Union will instill new immigration policies by October. The EU will have meeting to figure out the flaws of distribution flow among the 27 members of the EU. The Italian Prime Minister says that "the problem should not be left to the countries on the blocs edges". Europe is taking a united stance in being responsible for these immigrants and how to handle them. Italy has already tried to take over sea rescues in Malta, but the Maltesean government declined. Italy seems to be the country that most immigrants are showing up in, probably because of the water around it. There have been over 36,900 illegal immigrants arriving in Italy in the past year by boat. I think its interesting that Europe is trying to solve the same problem that we are with Mexico. Our situation is more difficult because it is not as far as a journey plus it is on land. It is definately a plus that Europe is acting as a whole and not just leaving Italy to fend for itself.

Economy: Gas Prices Nationwide Unchanged from 2 Weeks Ago
According to the national Lundberg Survey of fuel prices, gas in the U.S. has not gone up or down. The average has remained at $2.64 for two weeks straight. This lack of fluxuation is declared unusual but neither good nor bad. The average price now is $1.06 less than it was a year ago. Charleston, SC had the lowest price at $2.39 while Honolulu had the highest at $3.17. Although this article was short it still contained interesting and useful information. THe fact that gas hasn't decreased in price over the last two weeks is definately not a good thing but its a plus that it hasn't increased either.

National: Woman Who Tried to Kill Ford in '75 is Paroled
Lynette Fromme is now 60 and has spent the last 3 decades of her life in the Federal Medical Center Carswell. A follower of Charles Manson, Ms. Fromme attempted to kill Gerald Ford in September of 1975. Ms. Fromme, or "Squeaky", was released on parole. The details of where and who she will reside with will not be relased but officials assure the press that she will be closely supervised. Ms. Fromme was 26 when she shot at President Ford in Sacramento. The gun had no bullets in the chamber but 4 in the magazine. Lynette became obsessed with Charles Manson when he rescued her off the streets as an 18 year old troubled college student. She was sentenced to life in prison after causing a commotion at her trial. In 1987, she escaped from a women's prison in West Virginia to "be closer to Mr. Manson" who is serving life at a prison in California. She refused parole in 1985 and was released in 2009 for good conduct. This article was interesting to me because I had never heard about the attempted assasiantion or Charles Manson. I don't have a problem with Ms. Fromme being released on parole because she served her time. However, I am suprised she was not kept to fufill her life sentence.

International: Moussavi Forms ‘Grass-Roots’ Movement in Iran
Mir Moussavi, the oppositional leader to Iran, has started a new movement according to his website. His moment is supposed to defy a government campagin of intimidation against him and his followers. He is not claiming his movement as a poltical party but rather as a "movement to promote democracy and adherence to the law". He is calling his movement the Green Way of Hope. Moussavi feels his movement is necessary after being accused of a conspiracy against the Iranian government. Moussavi's statement did not include much detail or an agenda for the movement probably to prevent officials from cracking down any further. I think that Mr. Moussavi should have the right to start his own grass roots movement just like ones in our own country have been started but because he seems dangerous I would question his agenda and the legitimacy of "promoting democracy and adhereing to the law".

Economic:Hints of a Rebound in Global Trade
According to economy reporter for the New York Times Floyd Norris, world trade is starting to recover. Although the bounce back is small so far, it shows that world trade is rising again at a steady pace. The U.S. reported that its exports were up in June 2.2%. Most countries are experiencing a positive influence on their trade but it is nowhere near the numbers of last year. In the credit crisis, world trade fell much more rapidly than final sales to consumers. Exports directed at the U.S. are expected to pick up soon because industries are finally restocking their inventories. China also went up 3.7% and the American share of Chinese exports rose to its highest since before the recession. Even though the increase is small, it is good to hear some positive news about our economy since most of the news is negative these days.

National: Drug Industry to Run Ads Favoring White House Plan
$150 million dollars is being given to lobbyists of the drug industry by the drug industry for TV commericials supporting Obama's health care overhaul. This announcement has helped to clear some confusion about the deal between the White House and the drug industry that it would contribute $80 billion dollars over 10 years, the terms of the deal were not released. The officials of the drug industries' trade group, PhRMA, are meeting sometime in August to finalize the plans for the fall...the budget could end up being more or less than previously announced. It is interesting that the industry is spending so much supporting Obama because he spent $236 million on TV ads during his campagin while McCain only spent $126 million. The supporters of the overhaul plan are expected to gain much more support than the opposers, hopefully putting the money to good use. The commericals echo Democartic reform ideals about healthcare such as medical care for all and consumer protection. I think that it is hard to say right now whether spending this much money is a waste and that no one will really be able to decide how useful it was until the commericals start airing and the industry gets feedback.

International: Clinton and South African Discuss Somalia and Sudan
Hilary Clinton. on her tour around South Africa, met with the president of the country, Jacob Zuma, to discuss regional issues such as the war in Somalia and the violence in Sudan. Clinton and Zuma both agree in taking the relationship between the U.S. and South Africa to a "higher level". Because South Africa is a powerhouse in Africa, Clinton wants the area to ahve a larger affect not just in Africa but in the world. The relations between the two countries had previously been strained by former president Thabo Mbeki's take on AIDS and his refusal to shut down autocratic leader Robert Mugabe. During her visit through the continent, Hilary Clinton not only bonded with the natives but also gave them a sense of hope, tying them in closely with the U.S. by President Obama's relation to Kenya. Hilary's trip around Africa definately had a positive affect on us and them and hopefully we can restore relations with not only South Africa, but with other nations in the continent.

Economic: Mansions Go Under the Gavel
With our economy in the place that it is today, many people who have indulged in the real estate market, such as Jack Warner, are now being punished for it. Warner explains how he finally acquired his dream house looking onto the Florida Gulf but is now being forced to sell it with no other options. Jim Gall, the president of Auction Company of America, says that homeowners who have mansions that were on the market for $4-$7 million dollars are now calling him and begging him to help. Mr. Warner is in the same boat as many Americans today, his first company was liquidated and his second one filed for bankruptcy, making his assets fall under court rule. Aspen, Palm Beach, the Hamptons, and California are the biggest auction areas in the U.S. currently. Although the homeowner will usually make some money by auctioning their stuff, it is usually never enough. Warner only made $2.5 million on a house that was appraised for $14 million one year ago. The article really brought into view how desperate some people are because they indulged when the economy was falling. However, some people get lucky and make enough money off the acutioning to not end up broke.

National: The Land- Living in Tents, and by the Rules, Under a Bridge
Welcome to Camp Runamuck; a tent "community" beside the Providence River in Rhode Island. Runamuck contains about 80 citizens, a cheif, and a code of conduct. Mr. John Freitas did prison time, worked ina factory, and went back and forth between motels and the streets throughout his early adult life. When he and his girlfrend came across the bypass bridge over the Providence River, they decided it would make a perfect place for them to reside. The community has rules about equal share of labor, booze and violence, and the most imporant rule that no one person should be held more important than the next. When someone disobeys part of the pact, the rest of the community can vote for them to be "kicked off the island". Officials are soon forcing the community to disperse to another place that is not public property. Its amazes me to see how people are dealing with the state of the economy. I knew people were living in tent communities but I didn't know that there were ones that weer organized and actually operated as a real town. Kudos to Mr. Freitas for starting the community and to the rest of the followers for keeping it in tact.

International: Cuba Suspends Communist Party Congress and Lowers Projection for Economy
On Friday, July 24th, the Central Commitee of the Communist Party in Cuba held a meeting and decided to cancel the Communist Party for the first time since 1997. This change is supposed to help Cuba's leaders to positively influence their economy. The country's 2009 growth estimate dropped from 2.5% to 1.7% . The rough economics times started last summer and were caused by 3 hurricanes causing $10 billion dollars in damages and the international recession everyone is in these days. Raul Castro, Fidel's brother, explains that the state of the economy must be seriously bad if they are canceling the Communist Congress. The Congress will be postponed until this "crucial stage" is over with. I think this was very smart of Cuban leaders and definately needed to happen. Canceling one Congress will obviously not save the economy but it will definately help, and it seems that Cuba needs all the help it can get.

Economic: "Cash for Clunkers": A Car Buyer's Guide
The economic article I chose this week was in a different format than usual; it had a series of questions that readers hadasked about the program and answers that a CNN reporter gave. The Cash for Clunkers program was thrown into chaos after it spend $1 billion dollars in only a few days. The Q and A part of the article revealed a lot of basic but good info about the governement program such as : the program is not yet out of money and that it should last until the end of the week, you cannot reserve credit in advance unless you buy a vehicle which has to happen in person, about 40,000 people have bought cars under the program and about 200,000 applications are waiting to be screened, and if the program runs out of money and you haven't closed a deal than you are out of luck. I don't think that the government has the money to be spending on the program and that it is risky to take part in because if you decide to apply and go about the process and the program runs out of money you are stuck. I don't think the program will generate enough profit to have a solid positive effect on the economy.

Economic: North Dakota, a Place to go for Employment
A total of more than 9,000 jobs in public and private companies are open in North Dakota. North Dakota also has the lowest unemployment rate at 4.2%, compared to the national level of 9.5%. Michael Ziesch, a researcher for Job Service North Dakota says that a balanced economy, including robust energy and agricultural industries have kept the state strong. North Dakota also had the least exposure to subprime loans. The highest influx of people to North Dakota is from Michigan which has the highest unemployment rate at 15.2%. While its unfortuante that our country has so many states with such high unemployment rates, its refreshing to learn of a state that is actually doing well during these times, even if it is one that no one would expect.

International:Global Views of U.S. Helped by Obama, Survey Says
According to a worl survey, the popularity of the U.S. had increased since Obama became president. On the contrary, the survey shows major opposition to his policy of sending more troops over to Afghanistan. The survey, given by Pew Global Attitudes Project, shows an all time high amount of confidence in the U.S. leader from other countries. The survey which invloved more than 24 countries and 26,000 people also revelaed that anti-American animosity was high in countries such as Turkey and Pakistan (no suprise there). 86% of Britains say that they trust Obama to "do the right thing" when it comes to dealing with worldly affairs in contrasrt to the 16 % who trusted George W. Bush. After his speech in Cairo on June 4th, Israeli ratings of our president slipped from 60% to 49%. Closing Guantonamo Bay prison and setting a troop withdrawl deadline in Iraq were the two policies that gained the most support. I think that the increase in ratings is a good thing for our country, no matter what ones political preference is. The numbers show that many countries have confidence in him and think that he will be different than Bush, a view that I agree with.

National: Charges Against Immigrants Sent Home
From reviewing the cases of deportation of illegal immigrants in jails in Harris County, TX, it has been discovered that drunk driving and drug possesion are the two most popular charges held against the illegal immigrants. In the first five months of 2009, 670 cases of both crimes were recorded. Simple assault, aggravated assault, and aggravated robbery were also high on the list. 150 were arrested on trafficking charges and 101 of those 150 were also charged with running from the police. This article was not chalk full of info but did include a lot of numbers that I didn't know. I chose this article and found it interesting because I find it dumb that illegal immigrants would even engage in illegal activites such as the one above if they are already in our country illegally. I would like to find out the reasons they partook in these crimes, knowing that they would probably get sent back to their home country.

International: Zambia's arrest of editor triggers outbreak
In Lusaka, Zambia, Chansa Kabwela was arrested on July 13th, 2009. Kabwela was the editor of an independent newspaper who was charged with spreading obscene pictures to governemnt officials. Kabwela claims that she wanted to make officials aware of the consequences of the health workers' strike by spreading pictures of women giving birth in the streets. The Catholic bishops are urging the government to move away from the issue, claiming it is not a major one and that the government should focus on "violence away from the media". Many residents of Zambia claim that the charges against Kabwela are just being brought to harass and intimidate other journalists. I think that Kabwela should have the freedom to make a statement about her opinion on the strike but she should do it without exploiting other women. I am not sure if she had permission to photograph the birth of these babies but if not, I think she was in the wrong.

Economic: Obama wants $12 billion for 2-year colleges
For my national article this week, I decided to do something that most of us can understand/relate to since we are applying to colleges this year..even if they aren't 2 year institutes. President Obama has released a $12 billion dollar plan to help community colleges prepare the generation of today's teens for careers. As he explains his plan, he notes unemployment rates are still up and will be for a while before the decrease. In noting this, Obama also made the point that many of the jobs lost, such as in the auto industry, will not be coming back. Because of this, this generation needs to be educated enough to obtain different jobs. Obama's plan includes competitive grants would be offered to 2 year colleges to try nwe programs and up the level of their training. Money would also go to renovating and more online class options. Obama claimed that although our economy is suffering, this is a good use for the money; claiming, "Time and again, when we have placed our bet for the future on education, we have prospered as a result." I think this is a good use of some funds but maybe not as much as $12 billion. Right now, in the U.S,'s situation I don't think money should be spent on renovating colleges where it is not crucial its exsistence.

National: Calif. governor, lawmakers reach budget deal
Arnold Schwarzenegger, governor of California, and the state's legistlative leaders have finally foudn a way to to close the $26 billion dollar shortfall to try and get the state back on solid ground with no more IOUs. If the agreement is passed, it will provide temporary aid to the states "epic fiscal crisis" by issuing more than $15 million in cuts. The rest will be made up by borrowing and moving money from other government accounts and speeding up the collection of specific taxes. If CA does receive the loans, it will be able to stop issuing IOUs, depending on the rate that the cash comes into the treasury. I don't have a strong opinion for or against the agreement I just hope that it works. If this agreement works, it will add to the positive efforts in making our countrie's economic state better.

International: Israel/Gaza: 22 Days of Death and Destruction
Amnesty International plans to release a report of the 22 day "war" on the Gaza Strip earlier this year. Amnesty International is not happy with the way that Israel investigated the crimes and therefore, will focus on how ISrael used "battlefield weapons against a civilian population trapped in Gaza". Throughout the investigation, representatives for the company doing the research have found that most people were killed by attacks during the late night hours, children were killed while playing in their bedrooms, and paramedics were attacked while trying to rescue and save the civilians of Gaza. Israel has dismissed the situation and damaged they caused as "collateral damage", which AI clearly disagrees with. AI can investigate this because states have the resposibility, under international law, to start criminal investigations wherever there is evidence of war crimes. I think that AI is doing a good thing because it will help people that weren't in close proximity to the actual fighting understand what the attacks were like and also , Israel may realize the damage they have done.

National:Attorney General Considering Torture Probe
AG Eric Holder is contemplating opening a case in the U.S. Court that many consider done with and in the past. Holder is deciding whether or not to assign an investigator to the Bush's administration interrogation processes. Obama is not in favor of the probe because it is not a relevant issue and may distract him and his administration from the health care and energy reform. Holder claims he knows what disturbance this will cause in the White House now but is horrified by what he has learned from CIA reports. The act in question is if the CIA tortured terrorism suspects after September 11th, 2001. This issue presents an interesting view because it shows the seperation of powers. Even though the presdient, Obama, is against it...Holder still has the power to carry out the investigation if he wishes. I do not think the investigation should be ordered because again, it is in the past and would just bring unecessary drama to the White House.

Economy: Madoff Accountant Pleads Not Guilty
David Friehling, a long time auditor of Bernard Madoff, pleaded not guility to charges of rubber-stamping Madoff's books for 17 years without confirming their accuracy. Friehling also used his right to have a grand jury evaluate his case, something that usually takes place in a plea bargain case. His next court appearence will be in October so that attorney Lisa Boroni can have time to contemplate a "possible dispostion". Investigating authorites say that if Friehling had done his job, his records would have shown that Madoff owed billions of dollars to investors. I disagree that Friehlin got off because he, like Madoff, was dishonest with the customers and knew what he was partaking in at the time.

International: Pakistan: Taliban buying children for suicide attacks
Batiullah Mehsud, a prominent leader of the Taliban, has been reported using children in suicide attacks in Pakistan. Once the children are trained in the Taliban camps, Mehsud sells them to other Taliban leaders from anywhere between $6,000 and $12,000. Mehsud has admitted to this crime but in certain areas that are heavily populated the security cannot check everyone physically so he can get away with using kids in those areas. Pakistan has launched a mission to capture Mehsud, hopefully drying out his supply of bombers. There was recently a drone attack at a madrassa, a site for Taliban training that killed 14; the U.S. is the only country present in Pakistan that has the ability to launch missles from remote controlled drones so many are blaming our country. I personally think that using kids in these missions is not acceptable and should be stopped as soon as possible, no matter what it takes.

National: South Carolina GOP Votes to Censure Sanford
On Monday night, July 6th, South Carolina's Republican party, after many hours of deliberation, decided to censure Sanford for escapading overseas with his mistress. However, the Republican party did not ask the governor to resign. The censure reprimands the governor for "falling below the standards expected of Republican elected officials." Sanford replied with a thank you and an announcement to earn back the trust of the party and his state. To arrive at this decision, officials had to go through four ballots before a majority was reached. Sandford is refusing any calls telling him to step aside. The situation is made even more historic and significant because it is the first censure of a sitting governor in the South Carolina Republican Party. I agree that he should be given another chance because everyone makes mistakes and he did not hurt the state as a whole. Of course it affected his family and I'm sure even some of his close friends regarding trust but it did not harm his state at all.

Economy: GM to Get Final $20B in U.S. Funding This Year
General Motors Company will receive $20 Billion from the government throughout the rest of 2009. This will enable the comapny to leave bankruptcy court and launch a public stock program in early 2010. Steven Rattner, the head of the Obama autos task force, said that "an IPO for a portion of the government's stake that would return GM to public ownership would need a "decently robust" stock market to succeed." Officials predict this will happen sometime next year. In the "New GM", the government will receive a stake for $60B to support GM's turnaround. Before GM is fully back on its feet, the government will continue to monitor its progress similarly to how an institutional investor with a large stake in a company would. I don't really have an opinion as of right now because I think it is really unpredictable how spending that much money on GM will turn out. I think it could end up being a success or a failure, and $20B is a lot of money supporting a failure.

International: Brazil calls off search for Air France crash victims
On Friday July 26th,2009 Brazilian military decided to end the search for the passengers from the Air France plane that desceneded into the Atlantic Ocean in early June. Only 51 bodies out of 228 have been found. Officials still are unsure about the cause of the crash and time is running out to find the recorders which would assist them in figuring the situation out. One recorder taped radio transmissions and sounds in the cockpit, such as the pilot's voices and engine noises. The end of Brazil's search is a likely source for controversey between people who bleieve the search should go on, such as people who have unidentified love ones, and the people who believe this is the right time to stop because they have searched for long enough. Personally, I believe that other countries should now use there resources to search the Atlantic Ocean instead of putting all the pressure on Brazil.

National:5 defendants plead no contest in 'Jena Six' case
In 2006, 6 African American males were charged with attempted murder for beating a white classmate. The name 'Jena Six' refers to the 6 males and the town, Jena, in Louisiana, where the crime took place. Each alleged murderer was fined $500, must pay $500 in court costs and will have seven days of unsupervised probation. The Barker family is receiving large amounts of money to make up for the hate that influenced the violence on their son. I disagree strongly with the punishment that the six men are receiving because sure they say the case is closed because the Barker family received so much money but honestly, the guilt that the men feel and the memories of hate that Justin Barker still has will not be erased with money.

Economics: Free credit report ads: Stop the music!
Ismat Mangla, the author of this atricle, is warning readers that FreeCreditReport.com is actually not free. With the economoy in such bad shape, many citizens are trying anything they can to improve their credit and ultimately their financial situation. There have been numerous complaints to the Better Bussienss Bureau of the comapny charging customers $14.95 if they don't cancel their subscription within 7 days and some cases of being charged even after they have canceled. The Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility and Disclosure Act is counteracting companies such as these by requiring radio and TV ads to state "This is not the free credit report provided for by federal law.” I think that the new act will clearly have a positive effect for consumers but that the BBB needs to realize that many other comapnies, not just credit report ones, partake in the same kind of schemes.
